    Notes:

    He was schooled at the Schiller Real Gymnasium in Stettin where he matriculated in 1913. He enrolled to study medicine at the University of Breslau but volunteered for military service in 1914 at the outbreak of WW1. He served on the eastern and western fronts obtaining the rank of Feldhilfsarzt. He was awarded the Iron Cross (2nd Class). While in the army he was sent to the University of Greifswald to further his medical studies. At the end of WW1 he returned to the University of Griefswald to complete his studies, qualifying in 1920. He then moved to Bad Hersfeld, where his fiance lived, and worked at the Landeskrankenhaus from 1920-4. From 1924-35 he was as a general practitioner in Bad Hersfeld. In December 1935 he moved with his wife to Amsterdam and in October 1936, together with their daughter, they emigrated to Johannesburg. He requalified as a doctor in January 1940. In January 1941 he volunteered for military service and was given the rank of Captain in the SA Defence force. After WW2 he worked as a government medical officer in the Department of Pensions. He died as a result of a brain tumour.

    He became a businessman ("Kaufmann") in Stettin

    Josef married Harriet Ritter on 5 Dec 1893 in Stettin. Harriet (daughter of Emanuel Ritter and Agnes Blumenreich) was born on 25 Sep 1870 in Beuthen; died in 1942 in Amsterdam. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]


  2. 3.  Harriet RitterHarriet Ritter was born on 25 Sep 1870 in Beuthen (daughter of Emanuel Ritter and Agnes Blumenreich); died in 1942 in Amsterdam.

    Notes:

    In 1933 she moved to Bad Hersfeld where her son Curt lived, and in 1935 when Curt emigrated she moved to Beuthen. In 1939 she emigrated to Amsterdam with her other son Heinz. She died on 26 July 1942 at home in Amsterdam of natural causes, thereby avoiding arrest and deportation to concentration camps

    Notes:

    Parents are Samuel Ritter (occupation "gastwirths") and Handel Starcke of Beuthen (Bytom), and his occupation is kaufmann per marriage record.

    Brother is David Ritter. David had a son who was a doctor in Breslau. The son was married to Hannah. Hannah moved to Johannesburg when she was a widow because she had a son from a previous marriage who lived there.

    David had a daughter named Amalie who married a Mr Bloch and had four children. Two of the children were Dr Lippmann Bloch and Dr Albert Bloch. In 1936, they were living in Amsterdam.

    Emanuel married Agnes Blumenreich on 28 Jan 1870 in Beuthen (Bytom). Agnes (daughter of Heinrich Blumenreich and Dorothea Altmann) was born on 6 Jan 1846 in Gleiwitz; died on 30 Jun 1928 in Stettin. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Rosenberg O/S, Kreuzburg, Wroclaw and married Theophila Mamroth), Wilhelm, Paul, Dorothea, Therese, Bertha, Clementine, Paula, Rosalie.
